Waitati Edible Gardens

Waitati Edible Gardens

by Lynnaire Johnston

Another WEGies initiative is the possible development of a community
garden on Bland Park. While still being negotiated with a number of
parties, it is envisaged this would be based on the English allotment
system.

Under this system, allotment holders are allocated a piece of land
that is theirs to develop into a garden for growing the crops of their
choice.

The next step in developing this project will be a needs analysis to
determine whether there is sufficient interest in the community.
However, a number of local residents have already indicated they would
like an allotment plot. If you wish to be involved with this project,
would like an allotment, or simply wish to know more, please contact
Lynnaire Johnston, 482 1364 or lynnaire@wordwizard.co.nz.

LETTER TO 'BLUESKIN NEWS': Our choice and not the decision of a few

Date: Sun, 22 Nov 2009 14:52:24 +1300

LETTER TO 'BLUESKIN NEWS': Our choice and not the decision of a few

by Tania Turei and Alex Whitaker

Some Blueskin News readers may now be aware that the Blueskin Youth
Hall Committee is planning to build a 950sqm, 8m high steel barn in
our community park, Bland Park. See www.futuresteel.co.nz for a
picture of the planned building.

They have sought permission from the A&P Society who have given
approval "in principle".

I am really disappointed that the A&P society does not think it
necessary to speak with the community before making decisions of such
importance.

Last time I looked, Bland Park was "gifted to the community" and these
major changes to our environment should be our choice and not the
decision of a few.

On the subject of consultation the BYHC has been asked many times to
advertise and open their meetings to everyone. They have refused but
why?

They claim that they have a mandate from the community to proceed as
they like. They also claim that they have already consulted with the
community by way of a five question survey that was put out back in
February 2005. Since then, there has been no consultation with the
community who will be most affected by the building.

They will be seeking funding from the DCC and other major funding
sources for this building which will far exceed the $100,000 or so
dollars that is in the Youth Hall coffers.

Neither has there has been any proper consultation with the youth of
Waitati, who are purported to be seeking this building.

What would they do with $100,000 plus dollars if they were given a
real opportunity to investigate & design a project?

Imagine the sense of ownership and therefore care attached to a
project that the youth of Waitati really owned.

For example Hukanui primary school students have designed a real
sustainable building called "The Livingroom". They have sought
funding, applied to the school board for permission and had to prove
the worth of their project. They have to apply for resource consent
and they will be involved in the construction. It's truly their own
project and they have learned so much. (See www.ecoclassroomnz.com.)

The Youth Hall/Sports Arena is a steel building with no consideration
given to environmental impact, aesthetics, sustainability or even
basic heating & lighting.

The plans are in the Blueskin Library, please have a look but be aware
that the Playcentre have pulled out of the project and that the Toy
Library were never asked to be involved but both have been included in
the plans. You can also see a copy of the original survey.

I hope that we will be able to discuss this project and all others as
a community with the many innovative ideas that we have. This is the
principle of Transition Town Waitati – a community making decision
about what is best for us – not an elite doing it despite us. It's
time to move on to a new way for the community to work together,
inclusive, ethical and sustainable.

FEATURE: Bland Park

FEATURE: Bland Park

by Philip Kelly

Recent editions of Blueskin News have included articles about Bland
Park and so it seems pertinent and timely to provide some relevant
background, some of which is hopefully also interesting.

Bland Park is owned and administered by the A and P Society by bequest
of the late Harrison Bland. The Society manages Bland Park in the
spirit of his will which involves allowing the residents of Blueskin
Bay to use the park for sports, picnics, shows and other recreational
purposes when not required by the Society for its own events. In
recent times the park has been used for A andP shows/clearing
sales/family fun days, junior rugby and soccer and social cricket.

Unfortunately, there are also a variety of costs that the A and P
Society has to contend with, including rates, A and P society dues,
public liability insurance and general maintenance. In fact, it is
only the considerable efforts in recent times by past and present A
and P Society members that has restored financial solvency and got the
park back to a state where it is well maintained and regularly used.
This has also involved a relationship with the DCC who assist with
maintaining the grounds.

While Bland Park may appear a tranquil piece of the Waitati landscape,
this belies the thousands of voluntary hours that past and present A
and P Society members have put into its administration and maintenance
over the years. We hope to keep developing Bland Park so that it
continues to be available for recreational purposes to Blueskin Bay
residents.

Anyone wishing to know more about Bland Park is free to contact me,
and if I can't answer your question then I will do my best to find
someone who can.

(Philip is president of the Blueskin A and P Society)

NEWS: From Bland vision to grand design

The Blueskin Youth Centre Association resolved on Monday 25 May to
develop a replacement at Bland Park in Waitati for the old Youth Hall,
a former church, damaged by fire several years ago. It is proposed
that the replacement will be a covered, all-weather, roofed structure
with a hard, smooth playing surface.

The Association will hold a meeting, open to the public, on 22 June at
Waitati Hall, to advance its proposal. Full details will be published
in next month's 'Blueskin News'.

'Weggies' really dig Bland Park

By Lynnaire Johnston

The Waitati Edible Gardens group want to set up community allotments in Bland
Park, a scheme which has the broad support of the Blueskin A&P
Association, although details have yet to be fully finalised.

The plan is to make allotment space available on the park's highly
fertile alluvial soil to individuals, families and groups wishing to
set up gardens there. To this end, anyone wishing to take advantage of
this free space should register their interest by contacting me
(Lynnaire Johnston: 482 1364 or lynnaire@ihug.co.nz).

A Weggie meeting will be held in the next few weeks, essentially to
discuss how best to put the next phase of the community garden plan
into action, ideally so that by next spring green shoots will be
pushing their way through the soil in new allotments.

Remember, life membership for only $5. To get onto our email list,
send an email to: waitati.edible.gardeners@gmail.com

Fwd: Blueskin A & P Clearing Sale to be held on 4th April

by Paul Clements

This year's Clearing  Sale at Bland Park, Waitati is set for 4 April.
The Sale over the past few years has been a great opportunity for
anyone to market their goods and to recycle.

Itms for sale will be set out in lots with easy access for viewing and
running the Auction.

The auction is set to start at 11.00am, preceded by the delivery of
items from 8.00am. Contact George Terry (025 224 0311) with large
items you wish to advertise. We will run an advertisement in the
'Otago Daily Times' before the sale.

The day will have a Fair atmosphere with local schools running food
stalls, car boot sales and various fun events. It is the wish of the
A&P Society to involve many local groups in this event. If you have an
idea we have the space for you.

The World Famous Possum Toss will be run, so wind up those tossing arms.

The A&P also would like to encourage you to become a member, $10 per
family payable at the Secretary's Office. There will be a lucky number
run in conjunction with this promotion. We need your support to keep
this local facility operating for our community.
